Your Performing Arts Audition or Portfolio

Auditions, portfolio reviews, and interviews help us assess each student’s abilities and career potential as an aspiring performing artist. They also help students evaluate whether the university is the right fit for them, and vice versa.

Auditions, portfolio reviews, and interviews are held on campus throughout the year during Open House events. (Please check the SFUAD website for Open House dates.) We also participate in auditions / portfolio reviews at various sites around the country. You may alternatively choose to submit your portfolio or virtual audition through SlideRoom.

Regardless of how you choose to submit, all students must submit a personal statement through Slideroom. (guidelines here)

For those interested in acting, musical theatre, design (scene, costume, lighting, or sound), theatre technology, or stage management, the process should include the following:

Acting majors should prepare two memorized, contrasting monologues (two to three minutes each) from a published contemporary play or, with appropriate experience and comfort, a classical play. Resume and headshot are required at the time of the audition.

Music Theatre majors should prepare one monologue from either a Broadway musical, a published contemporary play or, with appropriate experience and comfort, a classical play, and one verse from a Broadway musical. Students should sing with accompaniment (versus acapella) and must provide their own recorded musical accompaniment. Resume and headshot are required at the time of the audition.

Stage managers, designers, and technicians should prepare a portfolio which should present examples of work in the form of progress and production photographs, prompt books, PowerPoint, sketches or drawings of productions, etc. on which they have worked, along with a current resume. Examples of related skills (e.g. sewing, construction, drawing, painting) are also helpful. You will submit your portfolio through SlideRoom as part of your online application. There will also be a personal statement required, (guidelines here). Prospective students may be asked to interview with the department chair and/or a faculty member to assess skills and a mutual fit.

Auditioning virtually through slideroom– Students who cannot visit Santa Fe University or arrange an off-campus live audition may submit an audition or portfolio on Slideroom at https://sfuadportfolio.slideroom.com. The requirements for this type of audition are the same as described above.

For actors and musical theatre performers, the whole body should be featured on the recording. Use the best quality video and audio recording devices possible. The performance should not be edited; it should be a “live” audition, with no stopping of the recording during the entire audition. At the beginning of the recording, students should state their full name and the date.

Prospective students may complete their Santa Fe University application either before or after auditioning.
