Auditions and interviews help us assess each student’s abilities and career potential as an aspiring performing artist.
Auditions and interviews help us assess each student’s abilities and career potential as an aspiring performing artist. They also help students evaluate whether the university is the right fit for them, and vice versa.
For those interested in acting, music theatre, design (scene, costume, or lighting), theatre technology, or stage management, the process should include the following:
Acting majors should prepare two memorized monologues (two to three minutes each) from a contemporary play or, with appropriate experience and comfort, a classical play.
Music Theatre majors should prepare one monologue and one verse from a Broadway musical; students must provide their own recorded musical accompaniment.
Resume and headshot are required at the time of the audition for all Acting and Music Theatre students.
Portfolio review: Stage managers, designers, and technicians should present examples of work in the form of photographs, prompt books, PowerPoint, drawings of productions, etc. on which they have worked, along with a current resume. Examples of related skills (e.g. sewing, construction, sketches) are also helpful.
Interview: All prospective students will interview with the department chair and/or a faculty member to assess skills and a mutual fit. Interviews enable students to talk with a faculty member informally and discover what the university and the student have to offer each other.
Auditions, portfolio reviews and interviews are held on campus throughout the year during Open House events (please check the SFUAD website for Open House dates.) We also participate in auditions / portfolio reviews at various sites around the country.
