Music concert featuring commissioned work for the worldwide Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Project and vocal music of Lebanon, Al-Andalus, Bulgaria, and Russia.

On Friday, March 31, 2017, the Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) Balkan/Mideast Ensemble, directed by Polly Tapia Ferber, presents a concert featuring “Words in the Wind”, an orchestral composition by SFUAD faculty member Melanie Monsieur, commissioned by the worldwide Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Project. The piece debuted in Washington D.C. in 2016 and has traveled with the project internationally, since then. Information about the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Project is provided below. In addition, the concert will include a Lebanese song lamenting the longing for home by people displaced by war, a 13th century poetic song of love from Al-Andalus, two songs from Bulgaria, and a song from Russia about the coming of dawn. Vocal direction is by 2017 Grammy Award recipient, Willa Roberts.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm in The O’Shaughnessy Performance Space, located in Benildus Hall on the campus of Santa Fe University of Art and Design, 1600 St. Michael’s Dr., Santa Fe, NM. The concert is free.
