Bell is the author of In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods
Santa Fe, N.M.—Feb. 3, 2015—Award-winning author Matt Bell is visiting the Techniques of Fiction class at Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) this February. He will also give a free public reading and Q&A at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in O’Shaughnessy Performance Space on campus.
Bell has received widespread praise for his debut novel, In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods (Soho Press, 2013). According to the publisher, the novel “is a powerful exploration of the limits of parenthood and marriage—and of what happens when a marriage’s success is measured solely by the children it produces, or else the sorrow that marks their absence.” The work has earned Bell a Paula Anderson Book Award, an Indies Choice Adult Debut Book of the Year honor, and a Michigan Notable Book mention. He was also a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award, among other notable recognition.
In addition to his 2013 novel, Bell is also the author of two other books, Cataclysm Baby (Mud Luscious Press, 2012) and How They Were Found (Keyhold Press, 2010), which according to Library Journal, “feature his distinct, syntax-bending style and subject matter that transcends genres.”
“Matt Bell is an innovative writer, not only in terms of the fabulous content of his work, but also in terms of his approach to electronic media,” said James Reich, a faculty member in the SFUAD Creative Writing Department. “As a former editor of Dzanc Books, Matt will bring exciting perspectives on writing and publishing to our students.”
