The concert showcases the sacred and folk music of Estonia
Santa Fe, N.M.—October 31, 2014—Santa Fe University of Art and Design’s (SFUAD) Contemporary Music Program will present the Heinavanker Vocal Ensemble in a concert featuring ancient liturgical music and Estonian folk songs on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The SFUAD University Chorus will also perform.
“The early sacred and folk music of Estonia is rich, inspiring, and not that well known in our country,” said Steve Paxton, chair of the SFUAD Contemporary Music Program and director of the University Chorus. “It is a privilege that these talented musicians will be working with and singing alongside our students, and share it with us in a magnificent setting such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis.”
The ensemble, under the direction of Margo Kõlar, will perform runic songs, Gregorian chant, Estonian folk hymns, and liturgical music from the 14th century. They will also delve into Estonia’s early sacred music and folklore through the prism of contemporary imagination in this evocative program of ancient runic songs and folk hymns, which range from joyful to reflective, sometimes featuring overtone singing.
Tuesday, November 11th, 7:00 pm.
