Santa Fe, N.M.—April 10, 2014—Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) announced today that the Greer Garson Theatre will open its next performance, the musical Spring Awakening, on Friday, April 25. It will run through May 4.
In this dramatic musical with a rock/pop score, teenagers discover their sexuality in the repressive environment of 19th-century Germany. Based on an 1891 Frank Wedekind play that was banned in his home country because of its subject matter, the show won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical.

About the Director: Gail Springer has performed as a singer, dancer, actress, and pianist since her first public appearances at the age of five. She received early music training at Chicago’s Sherwood Music School and music degrees at University of New Mexico. Recordings include “Crossover” Bruce Odland Big Band, and composer Ron Strauss’ compositions, “Five Pieces of the Puzzle & Arabesco” and “Tangos De Santa Fe; Matapolvos.” Since 1980, Springer has served as professor of theatre at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design Performing Arts Department (formerly College of Santa Fe), where she envisioned and developed one of the university’s most successful arts programs, the BFA in Musical Theatre. Her artistic home is the Greer Garson Theatre Center, where she has been director, music director and vocal coach for over 30 productions including “The Apple Tree,” “The Baker’s Wife,” “Bat Boy: The Musical,” “Circle, Mirror, Transformation,” “The Wedding Singer,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Reasons to be Pretty,” “Middletown,” “Once on this Island,” and nearly 60 Musical Theatre Workshop performances. When not at the Greer Garson Theatre, Ms. Springer maintains a private voice studio, and sings with Santa Fe’s only full time chamber ensemble, Serenata of Santa Fe.
About SFUAD’s Performing Arts Department
The Performing Arts Department at Santa Fe University of Art and Design introduces students to all facets of stage production, giving them the opportunity to perform, design and build sets, develop and produce costumes, devise and execute lighting schemes, and create and stage sound effects. Because of this strong foundation, SFUAD theatre graduates are known and respected around the country for their knowledge and professionalism. Each year, the department produces three plays, one musical and two dance concerts in the Greer Garson Theatre, a proscenium-style venue dedicated to the late actress, who is remembered for her philanthropy and distinguished career on the stage and screen.
