Austin, Senior, The Film School

I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. I started taking photographs in high school, and took my first film class in senior year. It was a film history class, but we also got to do some production stuff. When I got into film, I could explore my opinions, ideas and thoughts. I really enjoyed holding the camera and being able to tell stories. It’s fulfilling to put a story out there for someone else to watch and feel something. That’s the best part about it. When I got behind that camera, I knew instantly. This is what I want to do. I was looking for something new. I wanted to explore someplace I had never been before. For me, that was the biggest driving factor in choosing SFUAD. I had heard that Santa Fe was the art capital of the country. This place, I just felt it in my heart. When I first pulled into campus, it was nighttime. The stars were so vibrant, and the mountains were beautiful. We don’t have mountains in Missouri. I was just like, “This is going to be awesome.”

SFUAD has great scholarship opportunities, so it was the best option for me. Everything fell into place perfectly. It was like, this can work out for you. My first two years were great. I worked a lot, doing PA work or grip work. I was on set every weekend. If I wasn’t on set, I was hanging out with my new friends. My junior year, I was producing two movies at one time. That was my first time producing, and it went extremely well. It turns out that I have a talent for it, and I love it. That’s the key, is finding your passion. You can do anything as long as you’re passionate about it. I started producing for my friend Alvie, and we made our own production company, This Is Our Film. Now I’m producing three shows.

SFUAD is tight-knit, like a little Hollywood. People who are working and doing what they love naturally find each other. I’ve grown a lot being at this school. SFUAD has made me who I am, and I’m so glad to be here. I would hope that we can move this campus unity that we have here into the professional world and keep working together. That would be the dream, because everyone here is so talented, and we already have good relationships. I feel now more than ever that this is possible, to actually have a career in film. I’m starting to dive into the business side of it, and understand what it means to work in Hollywood.
