Contemporary Artist James Surls’ Outdoor Sculptures

One of the country’s most revered contemporary artists and sculptors James Surls shows his work at SFUAD campus

The sculptures on the SFUAD campus are part of a larger exhibition at Wade Wilson Art in Santa Fe, which is hosting a reception Saturday, June 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a tour of the outdoor exhibition in front of SFUAD’s Visual Arts Center.

About James Surls:

American sculptor James Surls was born in Terrell, Texas in 1943. He grew up on a farm near Malakoff, Texas in house built by his father. He studied art at Sam Houston State University and, after graduating with his BS, entered the graduate program at Cranbrook Academy of Art where he earned his MFA. Since that time, Surls’ work has been the subject of countless one - artist and group exhibitions both in galleries and museums across the country.

Works by James Surls may be seen in the collections of Dallas Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the High Museum, Atlanta; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Seattle Art Museum; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Solomon R.
