Miller was a composer and musician who helped develop the university’s music program
Santa Fe, N.M.—March 27, 2015— The Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) Contemporary Music Program (CMP) will host a memorial on Saturday, April 11 to celebrate the life and work of Steven M. Miller, a long-time Santa Fe resident who passed away in Oct. 2014. Miller significantly contributed to the fields of contemporary electroacoustic music and world music, locally and abroad. Miller was a singular creative talent as a composer and musician who oversaw the critical development of the unique Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe (now SFUAD) where he worked from 1995 to 2008. The event will take place on campus at O’Shaughnessy Performance Space (Benildus Hall) at 7 p.m. It is free to the public.
Most recently Miller was associate professor of Sonic Arts at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore. After being diagnosed with ALS, he and his family returned to Santa Fe in Feb. 2014, where he passed away eight months later. A positive force even in the face of this devastating disease, Miller said that one of the benefits of generally knowing when he would pass away was that he could plan his own memorial. With that in mind, he invited seven of his colleagues to compose new works specifically for the occasion.
A Gathering of Voices for Steven M. Miller will feature the premier playback of those new recordings by David Dunn, Annea Lockwood, Ingram Marshall, Pauline Oliveros, Maggi Payne, Steve Peters, and Larry Polansky. An eight-disc memorial anthology, Between Noise and Silence will also be available for purchase. One of his finalwishes was to release this collection of his music, and with help from friends he worked on this for as long as he was able. The box set includes a tribute compilation of works by composer friends created in his honor, as well as a DVD of his collaborations with filmmaker Michael Saul.
Miller was a passionate advocate for new music and co-hosted the KUNM radio show, Other Voices, Other Sounds, and produced the Santa Fe International Festival of Electroacoustic Music. He brought his considerable musical skills as a percussionist to a number of local ensembles. Friends and students will remember him as an inspired and dedicated educator, and as a generous and joyful person who loved to engage in intelligent dialogue with a delightful sense of humor. More of his recent work and writings can be seen at his blog http://sightssoundswords.wordpress.com.
